Programs (Match & Tournament)

This page collects match and tournament programs; where a match program might also be considered an official news organ of a governing body, that collection is more likely to have been placed in Newspapers & Magazines.

Australia Cup (1962-1968) programs
Match programs from the Australia Cup, the national club tournament which ran from 1962-1968. At present, this archive contains just two programs.
Available here.

Australian Men's team programs - 'A' Internationals
This upload contains extant match programs from matches classed as full 'A' international matches for the Australian men's national soccer team. It covers friendlies, continental matches, World Cup qualifiers, and tournament programs. Where the distinction between 'A' and 'B' internationals is unclear, use has been made of Andrew Howe's Encyclopedia of Socceroos to determine the category.

In some cases, the same program has been duplicated to indicate that it also covered multiple matches, usually on the occasion of a team touring Australia.More programs will be added to this archive as they become available.

Australian Men's team programs - non-'A' Internationals
This upload contains match programs from matches not classed as full 'A' international matches for the Australian men's national soccer team. It covers international matches not recognised as full internationals either by the Australian governing body, or by its relevant opposite number; games against Australian and non-Australian club sides; and matches against various representative teams.

In many cases before 1950, visiting club sides to Australia were designated by the press and promoters as being representative of their national team. Where that is the case, the "official" touring name and the relevant club name are both included. In some cases, the same program has been duplicated to indicate that it also covered multiple matches, usually on the occasion of a team touring Australia. More programs will be added to this archive as they become available.

Australian Women's Soccer Association National Championships - Open age (1975-1997)
The Australian Women's Soccer Association was the governing body for women's soccer in Australia from 1974 until the organisation was absorbed into Soccer Australia in 2003. Apart from official formalities, these programs often include profiles of every squad member from each participating team, providing rare documentation of players and the clubs they played for.

This archive contains a selection of programs for the Open (senior grade) tournaments, spanning 1975-1997. It is missing 1974 (Sydney), and possibly others after 1997.
Available here.

Australian Women's Soccer Association National Championships - Junior and Youth (1984-1999)
The Australian Womens Soccer Association was the governing body for women's soccer in Australia from 1974 until the organisation was absorbed into Soccer Australia in 2003.

The tournament lacked a consistent name, and at some points the AWSA conducted separate tournaments for the different age groups within the same year. Apart from official formalities, these programs often include profiles of every squad member from each participating team, providing rare documentation of players and the clubs they played for.

This archive contains a selection of programs for the AWSA's Youth and Junior tournaments, spanning 1984-1999. It is unclear how many programs are missing. It is known, for example, that tournaments were held prior to 1984, but not if programs were created for those tournaments.

Croatian-Australian Soccer Tournament (1979-20
13)
The Croatian-Australian Soccer Tournament (Hrvatski Nogometni Turnir) is an annual post-season soccer tournament for Australian clubs with Croatian heritage. The tournament, which has run since the 1970s, is held by a different host club each season. This archive contains a selection of tournament programs spanning 1979-2013. It also includes Croatian-Australian newspaper extracts of the 1978 and 1979 tournaments.

Olympic Games football tournament (Melbourne, 1956)
This upload contains match programs for the 1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne.
Available here.

Olympic Park Record (1968)
This upload contains extant digitised copies of Melbourne's Olympic Park Record, a four-page program on offer at Victorian State League soccer matches played at Olympic Park in 1968. The Olympic Park Record featured lineups and discussion of the week's Victorian State League matches at Olympic Park, which in that season was the home ground of Alexander, Croatia, George Cross, and Port Melbourne Slavia. The material within the program was largely prepared by the soccer journalist and former player Alex Barr. Barr's commentary also extended to criticism of the Victorian Soccer Federation. The Olympic Park Record does not appear to have continued beyond the 1968 season.

This collection, originally compiled by the Australian soccer historian Mark Boric, is currently missing volumes 7, 10, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21, and 22.

National Soccer League
The National Soccer League ran from 1977 until 2004, and consisted of 28 seasons. This archive contains an incomplete collection of match programs from each NSL season, for both league and cup competitions.

In some years - especially the mid-1980s - several clubs did not produce match programs. At other times, production of match programs by certain clubs might vary from weekly to monthly. In some cases a match program might also double up as the local association or region's weekly newspaper or magazine. The range in quality of NSL match programs was also significant. Some clubs consistently produced engaging programs, while others opted for products stuffed with ads. Some were a simple two-tone four page xerox job, or even a single sheet limited to team lists. In the NSL's early days, English may not have been the predominant language contained within a given program.

In cases where club produced match programs cover more than one game, this archive has decided to create multiple copies of those programs, assigning them an individual round number; this is done to more easily keep track of which games and rounds have been covered.

This archive contains match programs featuring Australian men's state soccer teams, as well as matches involving senior representative teams (eg. local federation or city based-XIs) The programs cover interstate soccer matches, matches against touring national, club, and representative sides, as well as matches against the Australian 'A', 'B', and other national teams. Much to catch up on in this section.
